Good Well, let's begin by learning about you and what led

you to poetry.

Speaker 1: I think it was as a teenager.

I found it was far less painful than hitting a wall in
00:02:30
frustration.
00:02:31
I was isolated as a child growing up, had all these
00:02:34
thoughts and impressions, as you do growing up as a young
00:02:38
teenager, and I had no other outlet for them.
00:02:41
So I started writing them down and it just seemed to come
00:02:45
naturally the easiest form for me.
00:02:47
It was quick, it was powerful, it was emotional.
00:02:51
So I wrote it down in poetry and I kept every single piece I
00:02:55
wrote from the age of about 16, squirreled away in little
00:02:58
notebooks, little boxes, little slips of paper.
00:03:01
And I've just continued ever since.
00:03:05
Speaker 2: I love that you did this and continue to do it,
00:03:07
because I'm a big believer in the phrase it's better out than
00:03:11
in.

Any emotion that you have is better written down on a piece
00:03:15
of paper or played in a piece of music or perhaps creating a
00:03:20
dance, and it's so healing to get that emotion out.

I don't know what it's like in the UK, but the arts are
00:03:27
gradually sliding away from education and that breaks my
00:03:32
heart.

Speaker 1: Absolutely.

Yeah, it's a real battle in the UK.

Arts funding in the UK is constantly being cut, whether
00:03:39
it's in schools or in the community.
00:03:41
It seems to be the first target .
00:03:44
And yet being creative in any form is so important to our
00:03:49
emotional mental well-being.
00:03:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, it absolutely is, and I 100% agree with you,
00:03:55
and I also believe that being creative teaches us problem
00:04:00
solving skills.

Yes, okay, now we know what led you to poetry, but what was the
00:04:06
impetus behind creating Script Haven Limited?
00:04:09
How did you raise the funds needed to make your dream a
00:04:12
reality, and what is Script Haven Limited?
00:04:17
That's kind of a three pointed question there.
00:04:21
Speaker 1: Yeah, so Script Haven .
00:04:22
It came about after a long-term frustration.
00:04:26
I do a lot of spoken word events for charities, for
00:04:30
organisations, as do quite a few of my friends, and there hasn't
00:04:35
been a go-to venue in the city where we knew we could have this
00:04:40
hosted, get an audience and not be charged a fortune.
00:04:44
That was the biggest you know stumbling block.
00:04:48
Communities, charity organisations can't afford to
00:04:50
pay for a venue.
00:04:52
Combined with the fact that I've got five collections out
00:04:58
and three of them are self-published.
00:05:00
And even when I was Worcestershire Poet Laureate,
00:05:03
the local sort of high street bookshop which is part of a
00:05:07
national chain, I went to them and said look, you know, give me
00:05:10
a table, I'll bring the books, I'll bring an audience, give me
00:05:13
a signing.
00:05:14
And they said no, they wouldn't stop my books.
00:05:16
And I found there was a lot of other authors, self-published or
00:05:21
small indie presses, who are having the same experience.
00:05:24
I was like that's ridiculous.
00:05:26
There's so much talent out there.
00:05:28
They deserve a real, you know main prominence um outlet for
00:05:33
their work.
00:05:34
I was discussing this with friends, um, in summer of 22 and
00:05:40
said you know, in an ideal world, if I lived a dream, I
00:05:44
would have a bookshop with a cafe you host events wouldn't be
00:05:47
an issue.
00:05:47
We'd focus on these independent authors.
00:05:50
And they just went.
00:05:51
Why aren't you doing it these days?
00:06:07
And you know, after quite a long protracted getting myself
00:06:09
back on my feet, after a personal situation, I was like,
00:06:11
you know, I'm feeling secure, I've got my own home, and you
00:06:13
know.
00:06:13
And they went no, no, no, no, no.
00:06:15
Those are excuses.
00:06:16
What's the reason you're not doing it?
00:06:19
And that shifted my mindset, because I've got a bucket full
00:06:24
of excuses.
00:06:25
I haven't got a reason.
00:06:27
So I started looking into the feasibility.
00:06:31
I thought, well, I can keep myself safe, ish, and set it up
00:06:35
online.
00:06:36
Set the company up, have a look at premises, starts really
00:06:41
formulating what we wanted to do for community, for schools,
00:06:45
reaching out and liaising with them.
00:06:48
And an ideal premises became available and I was like, oh, I
00:06:53
like this one, but it's high street and it's a very prominent
00:06:56
position on the high street in our city.
00:06:58
So I'm not sure I could afford that rent.
00:07:01
But the developer said well, you need to go and have a word
00:07:05
with the business owner, because it was a cafe and it closed due
00:07:09
to the owner's ill health.
00:07:10
I said, okay, I'll have a conversation.
00:07:14
Um, the landlord was very reasonable.
00:07:17
The rent was at the top end of our budget, but it was in there
00:07:21
and the cafe owner went I'll sell all the equipment.
00:07:24
And the cafe owner went I'll sell all the equipment coffee
00:07:28
machine, commercial kitchen at the back, the tables, the chairs
00:07:30
, everything.
00:07:30
I was like that saves a fortune .
00:07:31
That's incredible.
00:07:32
I'd be ridiculous to walk away from that.
00:07:34
So I said yes, but I still had no idea where I was going to get
00:07:39
the money for the deposit and to buy all the equipment.
00:07:42
And 48 hours later, an acquaintance of mine I knew him
00:07:48
but I didn't know much of his background he reached out, went
00:07:51
oh, I know you're trying to reach out to community.
00:07:53
You want to provide this hub for community.
00:07:55
How much do you need to open the doors?
00:07:58
And he gave us the money.
00:08:00
Speaker 2: Wow, that's fantastic , I was absolutely stunned.

So are you a non-profit organization?
00:08:07
Speaker 1: We're not a non-profit group.
00:08:09
No, we're not a non-profit group because the rules and
00:08:12
regulations around that would restrict the way we could
00:08:16
possibly grow the project no-transcript.

But it gives me complete freedom on how we can develop
00:08:28
things because we've constantly got new ideas coming on board
00:08:31
and coming in.
00:08:32
We had our first authors fair last month, so we invited local
00:08:38
authors, independent authors, into the shop to come meet
00:08:40
readers, meet other prospective writers.
00:08:42
We had 30 authors and we could have filled the space three
00:08:48
times over.
00:08:48
So next year we're going to have to get a bigger venue and
00:08:51
hire a bigger venue to do it.
00:08:52
We've got a festival coming up next month.

It's just so many ideas and so many projects that we're
00:08:58
developing.

Speaker 2: Yeah, once you start thinking about ideas, they just
00:09:02
snowball right, it does, it does .

Let's talk about self-published authors.

I self-published my first four books, or three books in a
00:09:11
novella, and in retrospect my first book could have done with
00:09:16
another edit.
00:09:16
Now, having said that, I was very lucky.
00:09:18
I sold 10 books out of the three books and the novella and
00:09:22
I'm proud of that.
00:09:23
But there are many self-published books out there
00:09:37
that could have done with a couple more edits or better
00:09:38
cover design, better formatting, the correct information on the
00:09:40
copyright page.

How do you make sure that the standard of the self-published
00:09:42
books you put in the store are equal to self-published books in
00:09:44
their standard or even higher?
00:09:46
Speaker 1: To be honest, we've been very lucky.
00:09:48
The quality we've been presented has been phenomenal
00:09:52
and we've had no qualms at all.
00:09:54
I think if we had somebody who came, who was new to the
00:09:59
industry, who maybe it was their first book, we would sit them
00:10:03
down, give them some advice, give them some pointers.
00:10:05
There's a whole group of us that work behind the scenes and
00:10:09
if we're not writers ourselves and we're editors or we've got
00:10:12
contacts of editors and local presses, so we would always
00:10:16
point them in those directions.

Just go ask the questions.

We'll do some research to get some feedback for you.

We also host a writer's circle, which is we've got a number of
00:10:26
well-established writers as well as new, inexperienced writers
00:10:30
in the group, and we find that that's a really good platform

for them to get advice.

It's about providing a safe haven and a hub for people to
00:10:39
try these things, to experiment and to learn, and that's why the
00:10:43
authors fair was so important, because they had some really
00:10:45
well-established self-published authors there.

We had a number of people coming in saying I've just
00:10:51
finished my first book, how do I go about the next stage, what's
00:10:54
the best thing to do?

And I think you know the feedback we got was everyone
00:10:58
came away with.

You know everything they wanted and a lot of advice.

so yeah we've been very lucky so far.

Speaker 2: Well, that's good to hear.

Now, books in mind, can you tell us about Black Pear Press,
00:11:09
the small press that published two of your collections?
00:11:12
Speaker 1: Yeah, so Black Pear Press I mean that was set up in
00:11:17
2013 by a couple of local writers who pretty much a
00:11:24
mindset as myself, knowing that there was a lot of really good
00:11:27
independent authors out there who couldn't get published and
00:11:31
that seemed unfair.
00:11:32
So they've got various backgrounds.
00:11:36
One is the chair of the Open University Poetry Society, polly
00:11:40
Stratton.
00:11:40
We've got Anthony Judge, who's got a background in telecoms,
00:11:45
run his own business.
00:11:46
He's an author himself, so he's got a good financial background
00:11:48

And then we've got Professor Rod Griffiths run his own

business.

He's an author himself, so he's got a good financial background

And then we've got Professor Rod Griffiths, who was the

Director of Public Health, so he's got a lot of sort of
00:11:56
experience in anecdotes and stories and together they host I

think it's about 30 authors.

They've got now in their books from poetry to fiction to
00:12:07
non-fiction to children's, got now their books from poetry to
00:12:12
fiction to non-fiction, to children's.

And I was first published by them as part of the prize I won
00:12:14
when I became Worcestershire Poet Laureate, which was to have
00:12:16
a collection of poetry published by Black Pear Press,
00:12:20
which was invaluable because they do the editing, the cover
00:12:22
work, they do a lot of promotion and marketing and launch, and
00:12:26
they've then since published a second collection of mine.

So yeah, local black pear, because black pear tree is
00:12:33
synonymous with Worcester.
00:12:34
Yeah, they're a lovely group of people to work with.

Speaker 2: I've never seen a black pear.

Are they actually black?

Speaker 1: They are, yeah, they're black skinned.

Yeah, they're very, very rare.

There's very, very few.

I think there's only about half a dozen trees left in the

county, so they are very rare.

pear and taste one.

Lena, while researching you, I read that you quote deliver

poetry to raise awareness of diverse societal concerns and

promote mental and emotional well-being, end quote.

Would you like to read us one of your poems that touches on

one of these subjects?

Speaker 1: Yeah, it's one I wrote last year.

Actually it's called Shades of Existence Brews.

It came about because there's been quite a movement to
00:13:23
recognise the experiences of all genders, irrespective of their
00:13:30
personal situation or how they identify, and the fact that
00:13:33
emotional and mental harm is, it's not gender-based.
00:13:37
So that's how this came about.

When did we make gender the agenda?
00:13:44
At what point did it become okay to separate believability
00:13:50
based on a person's sexuality?
00:13:53
Look again at the penultimate word in that sentence.

Person Abuse is abuse.

It is an aggressive act against a human being, one of
00:14:05
humiliation and pain.
00:14:07
Forget the playground.
00:14:09
Rhymes of sticks and stones will break my bones, but words

will never harm me.

Words are a double-edged sword.

Words can build you up or they can destroy.

A bruise is a bruise.

It doesn't appear differently on a man's skin to a woman's.

It doesn't hurt any more or less if it comes from a man or a

woman.

If the one you love and cherish means so little to you that you

can attack them on a scale of one to ten, the pain you cause

is in the thousands, because each act drives their love into

an abyss of tears and fear.

When did vulnerability become weakness?

Being open to feelings, caring, being anxious that the pain

will come again in waves so ferocious they can no longer

stand against the storm is not frailty, it's human.

Do not never, ever underestimate the effect of a person's words

or actions upon another, regardless of their gender.

When the bruises have stopped the shine of their smile, when

lived experience has driven a person to the darkest, lowest

possible, without the hope of a ladder to climb out, why is it

relevant to define whether it's happened to a man or a woman?

It happened to a person and it shouldn't have.

Look again at the person.

Remove gender from the agenda.

Um, it was a lot of situations where I've become very, very

aware that men don't often talk about their own mental health

struggles.

Um, it's not seemed quote unquote manly.

You know we use all these terms like you're man up or you know
00:16:37
all all of these things, and that's ridiculous because,
00:16:40
regardless of how you identify yourself, you're a human being
00:16:44
and you have feelings, and your feelings are just as valid as
00:16:47
anyone else's.

And I think there's certainly within the poetry scene, spoken
00:16:51
word scene, there are more and more avenues to explore that and
00:16:54
talk about that, where everybody feels safe to do so.

Speaker 2: I find what you're saying incredibly interesting

and it relates to a conversation I had with the owner of the
00:17:05
poetry pharmacy in the UK.

Well, deborah and I were chatting about how exciting it

is to see so many poets evolving on social media.

We both agreed that we need more spaces for these poets,

young and old and all the ages in between, where they can come
00:17:32
together with more experienced poets and writers to discuss

their poetry, to read it out loud and learn skills from
00:17:40
professionals.

We need more creative people and especially, more poetry in
00:17:45
the world, especially poetry like the one you just read.

Worcester actually has three monthly open mic poetry nights,

very different genres, and all three have actually asked to be

hosted at Script Haven, so we now run them all.

verbal abuse is it doesn't leave a scar that people can see on

What events did you compose poetry for during that time?

Speaker 1: It was a very challenging time because the
00:18:50
lockdown in the UK had just started because of the pandemic
00:18:54
the COVID pandemic.
00:18:55
So I had to really think outside of the box on how I was
00:18:59
going to engage community, because we couldn't go out to
00:19:02
events, we couldn't go to schools, we couldn't hold
00:19:05
in-person events.
00:19:05
So I started off with little things like writing poems to
00:19:11
just boost people's mood and pick them up and sticking them
00:19:14
on the walls of the flat or leaving them in different places
00:19:17
.

And when we had some restricted openings and we were allowed to
00:19:23
go around local places, I've got some local businesses to put
00:19:27
posters up with, you know, poems just to encourage people.
00:19:30
I devised a calendar to raise funds for the Royal Electrical
00:19:36
and Mechanical Engineers.
00:19:37
My eldest son is in the forces.
00:19:39
Well, both my sons are in the forces.
00:19:40

My oldest son is in Rimi and I asked local photographers to

give me a favorite photo for a month and then I combined it

with an uplifting poem for each month and all the funds went for

I did online events for things like the Poppy Appeal for

Remembrance.
00:19:58
So I had 11 poets, so 11-11.

It hosted online an evening of laureates, so we had former
00:20:08
Worcestershire Poet Laureates going back about 10 years.

So we had an evening conversation on Zoom, which was
00:20:15
accessible for everybody.
00:20:16
Gosh, well, I did private commissions for schools, for
00:20:21
youngsters, to learn how writing poetry can help them to
00:20:25
empathise with the situation with other people or understand
00:20:29
their own thoughts, as it did for me.
00:20:31
And that was done as a series of videos where the teachers
00:20:35
could use resources either in a whole series or as individual
00:20:39
ones.
00:20:39
Each one stood on its own as well, with a different theme.
00:20:44
And then, just as we came out of the pandemic, we've got a
00:20:47
lovely museum in Worcester called the Commandery, and it
00:20:51
was the site of the last battle of the English Civil War.

It's one of my favourite buildings in Worcester.

So so I did an exhibition of because I believe poetry isn't a
00:21:02
standalone art form, it combines with every form of
00:21:05
creativity.
00:21:06
So I combined photography with poetry, music, history and had
00:21:11
an exhibition where the visitor could walk around at their own
00:21:15
pace, in their own direction, and look at photographs that
00:21:20
were taken at unusual angles.
00:21:23
It was called space and shadows , to look at what's behind or
00:21:27
between the obvious that we see in our everyday lives and think
00:21:31
about the legacy we leave as we pass through life and just
00:21:35
reflect on that a little bit.

So I did.

That resulted in my final collection to date, which is a
00:21:42
coffee book table.

It's got a little QR code in so you can even scan it and listen

to the music that was playing in the exhibition, so it gave

people a reflective calm space because going back out in the

world's full of anxiety right now, especially after pandemic,

so that was a nice safe space for people.

So I think people have finally come to terms with the idea that

it's not something that sits on the dusty bookshelf that you're
00:22:41
forced to read at school, that it does have a relevance every
00:22:45
day.

It doesn't just have to be about fields of daffodils or
00:22:51
flowers, which are lovely, you know, the classic poets are
00:22:54
lovely, but there's so much to write about every day, about our
00:22:59
every day, and about people, about situations.

And it's wonderful to see youngsters.

We see it at our open mic poetry nights.
00:23:07
We have years of older teenagers 17, 18 year olds
00:23:11
getting involved right the way through the age demographic,
00:23:14
which is just wonderful.

And, like you said, on social media and on TikTok and on
00:23:19
Facebook, you're seeing all these really really talented
00:23:22
poets actually stepping up to the platform and expressing
00:23:27
their words, which is wonderful, really exciting.

And it's for schools and youth groups to perform.

So the challenge was I write in poetry.

That's a niche audience.

How do I make this more relevant and appealing to a

wider audience?

Video work, music particularly genre of music and combining

And the idea is that schools can set the stage the way they
00:24:39
feel fits their voice.

So one school has done it as a dance piece with a narrator and
00:24:46
another school has done it purely as a drama piece with the
00:24:48
music playing in the background , and it gives young people the
00:24:53
self-esteem and belief that their voice is valid and
00:24:56
deserves to be heard and will be heard.
00:24:58
So to prove that, let's get some big names to actually
00:25:03
listen and say, yeah, this is a good idea.
00:25:07
And the Hollywood Vampires, which is Alice Cooper, joe Perry
00:25:10
, johnny Depp they had just released their latest album,
00:25:13
rise, which I absolutely adore.
00:25:15
I love those guys and their music and there were two songs
00:25:19
on there that kept playing over and over in my mind the tone of
00:25:22
the music, the lyrics.

So if I put rock music with poetry, people are not going to
00:25:28
expect that and they're going to come, want to come and see what
00:25:31
it's about.
00:25:31
So I started sort of like emailing and messaging on social
00:25:36
media, every single avenue.
00:25:38
I could think of their fan groups, their music, um agents,
00:25:44
the record agents everywhere, all over the place.

I wasn't.
00:25:48
For six months, I wasn't really getting any response and I
00:25:51
thought well, you know, I know I can pay the royalty and the
00:25:55
copyright fees to use the music, that's fine, but I would like
00:25:58
some kind of comment from them.
00:25:59
It would mean a lot.
00:26:00
It would mean a lot to the young people taking part.
00:26:03
And then suddenly, out of the blue, I got an email from one of
00:26:08
Johnny Gluck's closest friends, as you do, and it was very much
00:26:12
along the lines of um.
00:26:14
We've heard you tried to do something with his music.
00:26:16
What on earth?
00:26:17
Well, it's kind of like this this is what I want to do and
00:26:23
it's you know it's not for profit.
00:26:24
So I do the workshops.
00:26:25
I get all the video work that I've done.
00:26:27
It's just shy of an hour long play, so they get all of that
00:26:32
for free.
00:26:33
And you know, build self esteem , know, build self-esteem.

Everybody's heard this song and , by the way, here's the script.

This is what I've written, thinking yeah, that's as far as
00:26:42
it's going to go, or it'll be like, uh, yeah, we don't think
00:26:45
so.

And then it was a few weeks later.

I got a beautiful email and reply which, just when, yeah,

the band are really honored and delighted to have been thought
00:26:56
of, give you permission to use the music for this purpose.

So it's just, you know, for the play.

And then gave me the most incredible quotes to actually
00:27:06
help promote it to the schools do you have any of the quotes

with you?

He'd been sober a while, and I had been too, and he is the

loveliest, loveliest man.

They generally passionately put back into their communities and

for young people especially know, especially with Alice's

Rock School, and I just think it that's wonderful to have those

people when I presented to the schools and said, look, these

guys have read the words you're about to perform and they

believe in you.

So that makes people oh well, if they believe in us and we're
00:28:31
worthy, we're valued and other people would listen.

If they listen, other people will listen and we could be them
00:28:38

We can aspire to be that.

So it's all about building that self-esteem and that hope and
00:28:43
that sense of self-worth for young people which young people
00:28:48
really, really need these days.

The end of January, the Times readers voted us the third best

independent bookshop in the UK.

Not quite sure how that happened.

We didn't know that was happening until the report was

released, delighted.

We've just done some major refurbishment works inside the

shop to enhance the space, because we're now supporting
00:29:19
around 200 independent creatives , which is um just stunning

That's fantastic yeah, I'm working on two books at the

moment.

One's a novel and one's a collection of flash fiction

horror flash fiction, which is another genre I write a lot for,

and I think it's just being here every day.

Currently I'm actually reading a book called the Innocence by

Bridget Walsh.

It's a small press, small indie press, gaelic press, and the

first in the series is called the Tumbling Girl.

It's based in well, it's set in a Victorian variety theatre and

it's a mystery whodunit crime with a lot of humor and romance

in there as well.

It's just really well written.

It's not a genre I would normally read, but I'm loving it
