She writes the monthly horror column for the New York Times Book Review. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and winner of the Michener-Copernicus Society of America Fellowship, Trussoni’s work has been translated into more than thirty languages.
My conversation with Danielle unveils the roots of her literary passion and her long path to getting her first manuscript agent and publisher ready, to becoming a celebrated writer. We reflect on the way pivotal life events, such as the loss of her father and a terrifying brush with violence in her youth, have not only shaped her narrative voice but also provided a means for healing and understanding.

I loved your latest book, the Puzzle Maker.

Yeah, I mean, that was sort of my goal with this book to have a

reader sort of enter it and in the first 10 pages be absolutely

unable to put it down.

Speaker 1: Well, you succeeded in doing that.

It's a fantastic read.

Let's begin with learning about you and what your life looked
00:02:07
like before you started writing your first book Falling Through
00:02:10
the Earth a memoir.
00:02:12
Speaker 2: Well, I always wanted to be a writer.
00:02:14
It's one of those strange things.
00:02:15
I came from a family that was very blue collar, working class
00:02:21
kind of family.
00:02:22
Nobody was a writer.
00:02:24
Nobody even imagined that they could be a writer in my family
00:02:30
and in fact I'm the first person in my extended family to go to
00:02:33
college.
00:02:34
But I was drawn to stories, storytelling and books from a
00:02:39
very young age.
00:02:40
I was that kid who you saw at the library sitting with a stack
00:02:45
of books, who was maybe 10 years old, and just you know
00:02:49
that was my weekend, every weekend, as I was completely in
00:02:51
love with books, and so I found myself writing stories as a
00:02:56
child.
00:02:57
In fact, my father who, falling through you, mentioned falling
00:03:01
through the earth, which was my first book my father kept a
00:03:06
little notebook that I had started when I was maybe nine or
00:03:09
ten, and it has fragments of stories that ended up going into
00:03:14
the book I wrote about him, which is very strange.
00:03:17
Clearly it was shelved somewhere.
00:03:20
I grew up in the Midwest, my father was a veteran of the
00:03:24
Vietnam War, and that's what Falling Through the Earth is
00:03:27
about.
00:03:28
It's a memoir, which is quite different from the rest of my
00:03:31
books.
00:03:31
I always wanted to write novels , but I felt that that story
00:03:37
needed to be told in a very raw and kind of real way.
00:03:42
Raw and kind of real way.

So I chose memoir as a form to tell the story of my father and
00:03:50
I.
00:03:50
He was a tunnel rat in the Vietnam War.
00:03:53
For those people who don't know what that is in the Vietnam War
00:03:55
there were miles and miles of tunnel complexes that were built
00:03:59
by the Vietnamese all the way back in the 1950s when the
00:04:03
French were in Vietnam, and they were used during the war as a
00:04:08
place to store weapons documents .
00:04:12
They had hospitals underground, and so certain soldiers were
00:04:18
sent down to go in and explore these tunnels, and my father was
00:04:22
one of those people.
00:04:23
Of course, he came home completely traumatized.
00:04:26
I was born after he returned, after the war, but the man that
00:04:30
I knew had severe PTSD my entire childhood, and so this is a
00:04:35
memoir about growing up with someone like that, but also
00:04:37
learning to sort of find peace in the relationship with someone
00:04:41
who's so damaged.
00:04:42
So that was my you know, that's just my you know a very like
00:04:47
nutshell version of my childhood .
00:04:49
But one thing I knew, even as a teenager, even as a young adult
00:04:53
, is that I needed to write that story about my relationship
00:04:57
with my father because it had so shaped me and storytelling was
00:05:01
my only way of making sense of it.
00:05:04
So it took quite a long time to write that book, but by the end
00:05:08
of it I had learned a skill.
00:05:11
I had learned how to tell a story and I had learned how to
00:05:15
have the sort of rhythm and discipline of writing which set
00:05:21
me up for writing novels.
00:05:21
Speaker 1: I think that's the gift about getting older is that
00:05:24
things that you've lived through, everything you've
00:05:26
experienced, starts to make sense.
00:05:29
And with that in mind, I was wondering is your dad still
00:05:32
alive?
00:05:33
No, he's not.
00:05:34
Speaker 2: He passed away right around the time that the book
00:05:37
was published, actually, so that was a strange confluence of
00:05:40
events as well.
00:05:41
I lost him and then I became a writer, kind of at the same time
00:05:45
.
00:05:46
Speaker 1: So it's almost as though your father's death
00:05:48
birthed you as a writer.
00:05:50
Speaker 2: It completely did, and the story that I tell about
00:05:53
this is that his obituary was published in the local paper the
00:05:57
same weekend that the book was reviewed on the cover of the New
00:06:01
York Times Book Review, and the editors of the New York Times
00:06:05
Book Review had chosen his photograph without knowing he
00:06:08
was going to pass away.
00:06:10
Obviously had chosen his photograph to be on the cover of
00:06:14
the book review.
00:06:14
So for me it was just this karmic moment, almost where I
00:06:19
was saying goodbye to the person who allowed me to become a
00:06:23
writer in some ways, and then, on my way, you know, like here's
00:06:27
your career, oh my goodness.
00:06:29
Speaker 1: that on its own is an eerily beautiful story.
00:06:33
Now you live in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where, as we
00:06:37
are recording this interview, the San Miguel Writers

Conference is underway.

Speaker 2: I do the, I do the programming for the speakers.

So I get to go out and knock on doors and say, could you please

And then, when they're here, I make sure that everybody is

having fun.

So it's a great job.

I get to take wonderful writers out for dinner and make sure

that their accommodations are comfortable and all of that.

Speaker 1: Oh, I know what that's like.

It's tricky and it is a lot of work figuring out all the
00:07:58
schedules with PR teams, marketing people.

It takes a lot of time.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard.

Luckily, there's a whole team of people that are taking care
00:08:08
of that.

But yes, it is especially because writers are so in demand

I think you know Christina Baker-Klein and Molly Ringwald

all of them and Chris Pavoni too .

They're all asked to do events all the time.

And so what makes this special?
00:08:23
Right, you know, and?
00:08:28
But I have to say that I too, obviously I'm an author and I go
00:08:29
to these conferences and festivals.
00:08:30
This one is one of the most special.
00:08:33
I think that the town of San Miguel de Allende and the
00:08:37
culture here and the restaurants and the people is just so
00:08:42
special that it really makes an amazing week.
00:08:45
Speaker 1: And what drew you to relocate down to San Miguel de
00:08:48
Allende.
00:08:49
Speaker 2: Well, all of those things that I just said, the
00:08:53
weather I can put the weather up on top because I was living in
00:08:57
New York.
00:08:57
And in February in New York, there comes a point where you
00:09:05
say I just need some sunshine.
00:09:07
And I was invited to do an event with the San Miguel
00:09:11
Writers Conference and my husband and I decided to come
00:09:15
and see what it was like.
00:09:17
And we were here and we were like this is such a beautiful
00:09:20
place, why don't we try to live there for a while?
00:09:23
And so we did and we fell in love with it.
00:09:25
Speaker 1: Well, it sounds fantastic and, incidentally, my
00:09:28
eldest son and his fiance are getting married in San Miguel
00:09:32
early next year, in 2025.
00:09:34
Oh, wonderful, and I asked them if they could plan the wedding.

Okay, let's get on to your latest novel, the Puzzle Master.

Protagonist Mike brings life changes dramatically after a
00:09:59
football accident leaves him with a rare medical condition
00:10:01
called Acquired Savant Syndrome.
00:10:02
In an article in the National Library of Medicine, daryl A
00:10:05
Treffert describes this condition, quote, as in which
00:10:09
savant abilities suddenly and unexpectedly surface in
00:10:12
neurotypical persons with no special prior interest or
00:10:16
ability in the new skills, accompanied by an obsessive
00:10:20
interest with and compulsive need to display the new
00:10:23
abilities.
00:10:23

When the idea for this book emerged, what came first?
00:10:27
Mike Brink's savant syndrome, puzzles or something else
00:10:31
entirely?
00:10:33
Speaker 2: That's a great question.
00:10:34
The puzzles came first, really, and also the character of Jess
00:10:38
Price, who presents this puzzle to Mike Brink, the character in
00:10:43
the book.
00:10:43
I knew that I wanted to write a story about someone who was
00:10:50
confronted with a mysterious puzzle that brought them into an
00:10:55
ancient mystery, something that seems completely outside of
00:10:59
21st century New York, where this is set and we begin with an
00:11:04
incarcerated woman named Jess Price who hasn't spoken about
00:11:07
her crime to anyone for years, and then one day she draws a
00:11:12
puzzle, she draws a cipher and it's very mysterious.
00:11:16
Her therapist doesn't know what to make of it and so, of course
00:11:20
, they call one of the world's most famous puzzle solvers Mike
00:11:24
Brink, and you just mentioned his backstory about how he
00:11:28
acquired this skill.
00:11:29
That part of this equation came later.
00:11:33
I had written a whole draft of this book without him having
00:11:36
that ability.
00:11:37
He was just a smart puzzle solver and I started to think
00:11:41
about it and I knew I wanted him to have a kind of compulsion to
00:11:46
solve and need, and also I needed for that character to
00:11:50
have the stakes be higher, where it's not just something he's
00:11:54
good at but it's life and death, for him Acquired savants, as I
00:11:59
think you mentioned in the quote from Dr Treffert.
00:12:02
They have a need to display it and the way that their brain
00:12:07
interprets their skill, whatever that is.
00:12:10
For some people it's playing the piano, drawing, mathematical
00:12:14
skills.
00:12:14
These savants and abilities are across the spectrum.
00:12:18
There's many different kinds, but for Mike it's solving
00:12:21
patterns and puzzles and it manifests itself in their minds
00:12:27
and for some people, almost the way that risk-taking or danger
00:12:33
or the high we feel from falling in love or some sort of liminal
00:12:39
, amazing experience.
00:12:40
Each time he solves a puzzle he feels that in his body and so
00:12:46
he needs it and he wants it, and so that becomes sort of the
00:12:49
driving force for him.
00:12:50
The other element very little bit one thread, because I think
00:12:53
writers pull from everywhere is that I have a son who has he's
00:12:58
not a savant, but he has a strange ability to read very
00:13:03
quickly and remember things.
00:13:05
When he was little, right Like now it's maybe a little bit
00:13:08
different because he's in a field that's really hard.
00:13:11
He's in college, but when he was like eight or nine he would
00:13:20
just glance at a book, not even really read it, just sort of
00:13:21
glance at it, and then he would take the test and it was perfect
00:13:23
, Like he had just remembered it , and I was always fascinated by
00:13:25
how that was working with him, because I don't have anything
00:13:29
like that ability.
00:13:31
And then I've seen, as he's gotten older, him working around
00:13:35
it right.
00:13:36
Sometimes that's a good thing, Sometimes that's hard for him,
00:13:39
Sometimes it makes him feel awkward in social situations,
00:13:42
and so I wanted to explore I mean, that was the emotional
00:13:46
pull.
00:13:46
I wanted to explore a character who has a talent but doesn't
00:13:50
quite know how that talent fits into themselves and their way in
00:13:55
the world.
00:13:56
Speaker 1: You bring up a great point, Danielle, and that is
00:13:59
that our children teach us so much.
00:14:02
Their curiosity reminds us to be curious.
00:14:05
Speaker 2: It's fascinating, I think, toni Morrison.
00:14:07
Someone asked Toni Morrison once should I have children?
00:14:10
And she said have one.
00:14:12
And I actually have three.
00:14:16
So I'm very busy, but I think having a child as a writer yes,
00:14:22
it cuts into your time, like you have less time to read.
00:14:25
Sometimes you have less time to write.
00:14:27
Your schedule is not as free, but I am continually discovering
00:14:31
beautiful, complicated human traits from my children and they
00:14:37
delight me every day.
00:14:38
So I feel very strongly that having a child is a good thing
00:14:44
for being human, but also for being a writer.
00:14:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, I equate it to the way I feel about fiction.
00:14:50
I think reading fiction and having children, they both help
00:14:54
us to develop our empathy.
00:14:55
Okay, let's talk about a couple of your other characters,
00:14:58
because I was taken with your character, thessaly Moses, who
00:15:02
is the therapist for inmate Jess Price, and I was wondering when
00:15:06
you first saw these two women, were they as you wrote them, or
00:15:10
did their personalities change as you develop the manuscript?
00:15:14
Speaker 2: Strangely enough, they were exactly as I conceived
00:15:18
of them.
00:15:18
As I mentioned earlier, jess Price was one of the first
00:15:21
characters to sort of come alive in this book, and I saw her as
00:15:26
this damaged woman who had been through an incredibly horrific
00:15:31
ordeal.
00:15:32
Her boyfriend died in front of her, essentially, and she's
00:15:37
accused of a crime that she doesn't understand how it
00:15:40
happened, and so her reaction is to go inward and to just clamp
00:15:43
up and not talk at all.
00:15:45
But her therapist is this wonderfully empathetic, smart
00:15:50
African American therapist who has been trying for years to
00:15:55
understand her, and I love that dynamic between women.
00:15:58
I feel like I've seen that before, you know, in different
00:16:03
manifestations, but I don't know if I've seen it between two
00:16:05
women, like, quite like that.
00:16:07
And so those characters were they just came to me fully
00:16:11
formed that way.
00:16:13
Speaker 1: I love the way they pranced onto the page.

It's great.

Speaker 2: It's so unusual actually For me.
00:16:19
I'm usually developing characters for a long time.
00:16:21
So you know, with Mike Brink it took a long time for him to
00:16:25
become a round full character.
00:16:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, and look at him now.
00:16:29
Speaker 2: Now he's, you know, he's really established himself,
00:16:33
he's not leaving.
00:16:34
Speaker 1: Yeah, he's there to stay.
00:16:35
In your October 2023 essay for Crime Reads titled what Are
00:16:41
Thriller Authors Truly Afraid Of , you wrote about a
00:16:44
life-changing event you experienced in fifth grade.
00:16:47
Can you share that event with our listeners and how it
00:16:51
influenced your writing and anxiety about religion?
00:16:55
Speaker 2: So when I was in fifth grade, I was in Catholic
00:16:58
school.
00:16:58
I had been in Catholic school since first grade and part of
00:17:02
the program was every morning from, I think, 7.30 until 8,
00:17:06
there was mass, and all the little children would go and sit
00:17:10
in the pews, and we would do that every day, and then one day
00:17:13
after mass, the students exited .
00:17:14
It was about eight o'clock in the pews, and we would do that
00:17:15
every day, and then one day after mass, uh, the the students
00:17:16
exited.
00:17:17
It was about eight o'clock in the morning.
00:17:19
We went into our classrooms it's cold, remember that and
00:17:23
everyone was sitting down.
00:17:25
I had to go to the bathroom and so I got.
00:17:26
I asked to go and I was in the restroom, which was sort of at
00:17:29
one end of the school, and I heard shots.
00:17:32
I didn't know exactly what it was.
00:17:36
I mean, my father was a hunter, so I had heard gunshots before.
00:17:39
But I was very confused and I came out of the restroom area
00:17:45
and the principal of the school, a nun named Sister Rose Francis
00:17:49
, came running from the church into the door and she took a
00:17:54
broom and she, you know, barricaded the door.
00:17:58
What had happened is that a gunman had come into the church
00:18:01
and had shot the priest, a lay minister and a janitor and was
00:18:06
in the basement of the church trying to get into the lunchroom
00:18:09
where the cooks were preparing lunch.
00:18:11
All three of those people that were shot had died and it was
00:18:19
just a kind of life-changing moment for me because before
00:18:23
that point I had never really questioned death or violence or
00:18:30
any of those things and also the way these things happen.
00:18:34
It's strange because it folded into religion for me, the way
00:18:38
these things do, and even I didn't realize that that was the
00:18:42
case.
00:18:42
But then as an adult, when I started writing novels,
00:18:46
inevitably there was this confluence of mysticism,
00:18:50
religion, imagery from religious paintings and murals and
00:18:57
violence and it didn't fully like dawn on me that this was
00:19:02
perhaps something that I was taking with me from my childhood
00:19:05
until actually, the Puzzle Master right, the new book, when
00:19:08
I'm like, here I am again, you know, exploring religion or
00:19:11
mysticism in some way through violence.
00:19:12
And how is that?
00:19:13
You know exploring religion or mysticism in some way through
00:19:14
violence.
00:19:15
And how is that?
00:19:16
You know, how is that possible?
00:19:18
Because I'm really, you know, you know this Puzzle Master
00:19:21
character.
00:19:21
He really has nothing to do with religion or violence.
00:19:25
So, yeah, I think that that experience really shaped me, and
00:19:31
it's taken a long time for me not only to realize it, but now
00:19:36
in my new book.
00:19:37
I have a book coming out after the Puzzle Master called the
00:19:39
Puzzle Box.
00:19:40
There's not really that element in it and I feel sort of
00:19:44
liberated because I think I realized it with this book that
00:19:46
that's what was happening.
00:19:48
Speaker 1: And with that we've kind of circled back to what we
00:19:50
were talking about earlier experiences from our past
00:19:54
showing up again as we get older , but we're able to have a
00:19:58
deeper understanding of them.
00:19:59
I am so sorry you went through that experience.
00:20:03
That must have been terrifying as a child.
00:20:05
Do you ever speak to any of the other children that you were at
00:20:09
school with at that time?
00:20:11
Speaker 2: So all of this happened in Wisconsin, where I
00:20:13
grew up.
00:20:13
I left that state fairly early in my early 20s, but recently I
00:20:20
reconnected with a boy who was in my class.
00:20:22
He was sort of my little companion.
00:20:26
He was someone who they used to have these reading contests
00:20:30
where they had, like, you know, you'd color in a square of a
00:20:33
drawing after you read a book, and he and I were always like
00:20:35
competing to win.
00:20:36
He was very smart and really fun, and he reached out to me on
00:20:41
Facebook a while ago and we have sort of you know, exchanged
00:20:45
thoughts about it.
00:20:47
I haven't sat down in person with someone.
00:20:49
I would like to, though, because I'm really interested to
00:20:54
see how other people that went through that experience
00:20:56
metabolized it.
00:20:58
For me, writing is a way of metabolizing experience.
00:21:02
My memoir about my father allowed me to grow beyond that
00:21:08
childhood experience in many ways and be able to also help
00:21:12
other people.
00:21:12
That book is taught in schools, and children read it and can
00:21:17
see an echo of their situation in it, but I wonder how other
00:21:20
people who don't have that ability to write and reflect in
00:21:24
that way go through life.
00:21:26
Yes, one hopes they have some other creative outlet, whether
00:21:29
it be through music, dance or art, exactly some sort of
00:21:32
expression right, some sort of way of making that narrative,
00:21:34
some sort of expression right, some sort of way of making that
00:21:37
narrative understandable, because it's really confusing
00:21:41
for a child to understand that level of violence and fear.
00:21:46
Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, I mean look at your experience.
00:21:50
It took you decades before you were actually able to understand
00:21:52
the experience, and that came through writing.
00:21:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, it takes us our whole lives, you know, for many
00:21:59
things.
00:22:00
Speaker 1: Well, let's move on to something a little lighter,
00:22:03
and that is I would love to hear your publishing story, from
00:22:05
your first finished manuscript to finding an agent and landing
00:22:09
a publishing deal, ah so it was a long journey.
00:22:14
Speaker 2: I started writing, as I mentioned, that that memoir
00:22:17
about my father was the book I wanted to write.
00:22:19
I never saw myself as a writer, as like a career writer.
00:22:22
I just wanted to tell stories and I wanted to write that
00:22:25
particular book and so I wrote some pages of that and they got
00:22:29
me into the Iowa Writers Workshop in Iowa City.
00:22:32
I was writing it as fiction at the time, interestingly enough,
00:22:40
because I didn't really understand that it needed to be
00:22:42
a memoir, and so I spent two years there writing a novel
00:22:47
about my relationship with my father.
00:22:48
Some of the sections were very much my life, right.
00:22:50
I basically transcribed conversations and experiences
00:22:53
with my father and then I got out of Iowa I, I graduated and I
00:22:58
won a small prize for that book and then that prize sort of
00:23:02
gave me the ability to find an agent.
00:23:04
So this agent said, okay, I'll try to sell it, and sent it out
00:23:08
to, I think, 25 editors and it was rejected by everyone and the
00:23:14
the feedback that was coming back to us, to me, was that it
00:23:19
was just unbelievable, right, even though it was pretty much a
00:23:22
true.
00:23:23
You know, a lot of it was a true story, the events of my
00:23:27

For example, my father brought home a human skull from Vietnam

and it was on the mantle of our living room that those sorts of

details were so strange that it almost had to be nonfiction.

But I couldn't realize that as I was writing it.

I needed that feedback and also to feel that shock, right, the
00:23:49
shock of oh, my goodness.
00:23:50
I just spent like three years or whatever, writing this draft
00:23:55
and it's not working.
00:23:56
But, as many writers do, I put it aside and I decided to try it
00:24:03
as a memoir.
00:24:04
I took some of the same material that was in that book
00:24:07
and I rewrote it and rearranged it on a 50 page sample.
00:24:11
We sold that book with six editors bidding a couple of.
00:24:16
It was a couple of years later.
00:24:17
I, you know I spent a lot of time fixing it up, but still it
00:24:21
shows you readers don't often think about the importance of
00:24:25
genre or how you're packaging or framing that story, but for me
00:24:30
as a writer, it taught me that the way that we present the
00:24:33
story nonfiction, fiction, memoir, thriller, literary
00:24:37
fiction all of these categories signal something for a reader
00:24:42
and it was immediately acceptable.
00:24:46
Speaker 1: Pretty much the same story Was it difficult to put it
00:24:49
back into first person.
00:24:51
Speaker 2: It was very hard because all of the devices that
00:24:54
I had created in fiction to protect myself I had to tear
00:24:58
away.
00:24:58
So that book Falling Through the Earth, the memoir that was
00:25:03
eventually published, is very much about my journey, even
00:25:08
though it's about my relationship with my father.
00:25:10
It's about how I grew through that relationship and I think
00:25:15
with the novel I didn't want to address that as much.
00:25:18
I wasn't able to address that and so it was very hard.
00:25:21
It took a long time to write.
00:25:23
You know there were times with that book you know this has
00:25:26
never happened again where I was crying as I was writing because
00:25:29
it was so personal and such a healing experience for me that
00:25:35
it had to be that way.
00:25:36
But you know that was the process and I'm very proud of
00:25:40
that book.

It's a unique book in my in I've written seven books and
00:25:44
it's very unique considering what it is.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it definitely takes courage to write a memoir.

Okay, let's talk about the Iowa Writers Workshop.

How was this experience and what takeaways from this course
00:25:58
did you find most valuable?
00:26:00
Speaker 2: So it was an extremely wonderful thing to
00:26:03
have happened, because I was, you know, a young woman who had
00:26:08
no network of writers.
00:26:10
As I mentioned, no one in my family was a writer.
00:26:13
Nobody really even understood what that meant and I, you know,
00:26:18
would seek out other people who wrote, but no one was writing
00:26:21
consistently or professionally.
00:26:22
So going to the Iowa Writers Workshop was wonderful for me
00:26:25
because I met people who were as serious about this process as I
00:26:30
was.
00:26:30
It also gave me two full years to do nothing but write.
00:26:35
I think for a young writer or anyone who wants to write
00:26:41
seriously, what you need is time uninterrupted as much as
00:26:46
possible, so that you're not working full time doing
00:26:49
something else and then doing this on the side.

So that was really great.
00:26:52
It's interesting because there was a panel here yesterday at
00:26:55
the San Miguel Writers Conference with five writers and
00:26:58
the question was asked about MFA programs and one person said
00:27:02
, oh, I'm so glad I didn't go to one, because she felt that it
00:27:07
would have sort of made her more like other writers, like her
00:27:12
individuality and things that make her special as a writer
00:27:16
would have been sanded down.
00:27:17
And you know there's a lot of complaint that workshop stories
00:27:21
are very mediocre because they're what everybody likes.
00:27:25
It's like art by committee and, interestingly for me, I was at
00:27:29
that time writing the story about my father and I didn't.
00:27:33
I've never written short stories, I've always.
00:27:34
That was a novel and so I was outside of the mold anyway and I
00:27:38
always got everyone.
00:27:39
No one knew what to do with me anyway, so I wasn't.
00:27:42
You know.
00:27:43
Nothing was sanded down or made by committee, because everyone
00:27:46
just either sort of kind of shrugged their shoulders like
00:27:48
what's this?

You know she's turning in pieces of a novel.

I don't even understand the narrative arc here because we
00:27:53
don't have the beginning or the end.
00:27:55
We have this little piece in the middle.

So that was pretty good for me, I think.

Speaker 1: It sounds like it was more about the community of
00:28:02
being around like-minded people.
00:28:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess I mean looking at it retrospectively,
00:28:13
modeling myself on writers who were successful.
00:28:14
When I was there, we had visiting writers, we had the
00:28:17
faculty.
00:28:18
We had so many interesting and successful writers coming
00:28:21
through that I saw really for the first time in my life that
00:28:25
writing is something I could do every day, and then it's
00:28:29
something that I could do my whole life and it wasn't going
00:28:31
to be just those two years where I was in school.
00:28:35
So that was really special.
00:28:37

What are you currently reading?

Speaker 2: I am currently reading a Chris Pavone novel.

Actually, I just got it yesterday, so I've just started.

He wrote Two Nights in Lisbon, which was a bestseller, I think

a year ago or two years ago.

He's here at the Writers' Conference, so I'm giving him a

The book I'm reading I think was his second novel and he

writes international thrillers with female heroines.

Speaker 1: And they're all really wonderful, so I highly

into a culture and getting rhythms, like I wake up and this

is the coffee shop I like to go to and these are the people

that I meet and know because I've been there.

Even if you live in another English speaking country, there

are so many cultural activities and rituals to explore.

That's what I love about living in other countries and, like

Yeah, I mean, that was sort of my goal with this book to have a

reader sort of enter it and in the first 10 pages be absolutely

unable to put it down.

Let's begin with learning about you and what your life looked
00:02:07
like before you started writing your first book Falling Through
00:02:10
the Earth a memoir.
00:02:12
Speaker 2: Well, I always wanted to be a writer.
00:02:14
It's one of those strange things.
00:02:15
I came from a family that was very blue collar, working class
00:02:21
kind of family.
00:02:22
Nobody was a writer.
00:02:24
Nobody even imagined that they could be a writer in my family
00:02:30
and in fact I'm the first person in my extended family to go to
00:02:33
college.
00:02:34
But I was drawn to stories, storytelling and books from a
00:02:39
very young age.
00:02:40
I was that kid who you saw at the library sitting with a stack
00:02:45
of books, who was maybe 10 years old, and just you know
00:02:49
that was my weekend, every weekend, as I was completely in
00:02:51
love with books, and so I found myself writing stories as a
00:02:56
child.
00:02:57
In fact, my father who, falling through you, mentioned falling
00:03:01
through the earth, which was my first book my father kept a
00:03:06
little notebook that I had started when I was maybe nine or
00:03:09
ten, and it has fragments of stories that ended up going into
00:03:14
the book I wrote about him, which is very strange.
00:03:17
Clearly it was shelved somewhere.
00:03:20
I grew up in the Midwest, my father was a veteran of the
00:03:24
Vietnam War, and that's what Falling Through the Earth is
00:03:27
about.
00:03:28
It's a memoir, which is quite different from the rest of my
00:03:31
books.
00:03:31
I always wanted to write novels , but I felt that that story
00:03:37
needed to be told in a very raw and kind of real way.
00:03:42
Raw and kind of real way.
00:03:48
So I chose memoir as a form to tell the story of my father and
00:03:50
I.
00:03:50
He was a tunnel rat in the Vietnam War.
00:03:53
For those people who don't know what that is in the Vietnam War
00:03:55
there were miles and miles of tunnel complexes that were built
00:03:59
by the Vietnamese all the way back in the 1950s when the
00:04:03
French were in Vietnam, and they were used during the war as a
00:04:08
place to store weapons documents .
00:04:12
They had hospitals underground, and so certain soldiers were
00:04:18
sent down to go in and explore these tunnels, and my father was
00:04:22
one of those people.
00:04:23
Of course, he came home completely traumatized.
00:04:26
I was born after he returned, after the war, but the man that
00:04:30
I knew had severe PTSD my entire childhood, and so this is a
00:04:35
memoir about growing up with someone like that, but also
00:04:37
learning to sort of find peace in the relationship with someone
00:04:41
who's so damaged.
00:04:42
So that was my you know, that's just my you know a very like
00:04:47
nutshell version of my childhood .
00:04:49
But one thing I knew, even as a teenager, even as a young adult
00:04:53
, is that I needed to write that story about my relationship
00:04:57
with my father because it had so shaped me and storytelling was
00:05:01
my only way of making sense of it.
00:05:04
So it took quite a long time to write that book, but by the end
00:05:08
of it I had learned a skill.
00:05:11
I had learned how to tell a story and I had learned how to
00:05:15
have the sort of rhythm and discipline of writing which set
00:05:21
me up for writing novels.
00:05:21
Speaker 1: I think that's the gift about getting older is that
00:05:24
things that you've lived through, everything you've
00:05:26
experienced, starts to make sense.
00:05:29
And with that in mind, I was wondering is your dad still
00:05:32
alive?
00:05:33
No, he's not.
00:05:34
Speaker 2: He passed away right around the time that the book
00:05:37
was published, actually, so that was a strange confluence of
00:05:40
events as well.
00:05:41
I lost him and then I became a writer, kind of at the same time
00:05:45
.
00:05:46
Speaker 1: So it's almost as though your father's death
00:05:48
birthed you as a writer.
00:05:50
Speaker 2: It completely did, and the story that I tell about
00:05:53
this is that his obituary was published in the local paper the
00:05:57
same weekend that the book was reviewed on the cover of the New
00:06:01
York Times Book Review, and the editors of the New York Times
00:06:05
Book Review had chosen his photograph without knowing he
00:06:08
was going to pass away.
00:06:10
Obviously had chosen his photograph to be on the cover of
00:06:14
the book review.
00:06:14
So for me it was just this karmic moment, almost where I
00:06:19
was saying goodbye to the person who allowed me to become a
00:06:23
writer in some ways, and then, on my way, you know, like here's
00:06:27
your career, oh my goodness.
00:06:29
Speaker 1: that on its own is an eerily beautiful story.
00:06:33
Now you live in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where, as we
00:06:37
are recording this interview, the San Miguel Writers
00:06:40
Conference is underway.

Speaker 2: It is.

It's a wonderful conference to all of those listeners who ever

Speaker 2: I do the, I do the programming for the speakers.

So I get to go out and knock on doors and say, could you please

And then, when they're here, I make sure that everybody is

having fun.

So it's a great job.

I get to take wonderful writers out for dinner and make sure
00:07:49
that their accommodations are comfortable and all of that.

Speaker 1: Oh, I know what that's like.

It's tricky and it is a lot of work figuring out all the
00:07:58
schedules with PR teams, marketing people.

It takes a lot of time.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard.

Luckily, there's a whole team of people that are taking care
00:08:08
of that.

But yes, it is especially because writers are so in demand

I think you know Christina Baker-Klein and Molly Ringwald

all of them and Chris Pavoni too .

They're all asked to do events all the time.

And so what makes this special?

Right, you know, and?

But I have to say that I too, obviously I'm an author and I go
00:08:29
to these conferences and festivals.
00:08:30
This one is one of the most special.
00:08:33
I think that the town of San Miguel de Allende and the
00:08:37
culture here and the restaurants and the people is just so
00:08:42
special that it really makes an amazing week.
00:08:45
Speaker 1: And what drew you to relocate down to San Miguel de
00:08:48
Allende.
00:08:49
Speaker 2: Well, all of those things that I just said, the
00:08:53
weather I can put the weather up on top because I was living in
00:08:57
New York.
00:08:57
And in February in New York, there comes a point where you
00:09:05
say I just need some sunshine.
00:09:07
And I was invited to do an event with the San Miguel
00:09:11
Writers Conference and my husband and I decided to come
00:09:15
and see what it was like.
00:09:17
And we were here and we were like this is such a beautiful
00:09:20
place, why don't we try to live there for a while?
00:09:23
And so we did and we fell in love with it.
00:09:25
Speaker 1: Well, it sounds fantastic and, incidentally, my
00:09:28
eldest son and his fiance are getting married in San Miguel
00:09:32
early next year, in 2025.
00:09:34
Oh, wonderful, and I asked them if they could plan the wedding.

Okay, let's get on to your latest novel, the Puzzle Master.

Protagonist Mike brings life changes dramatically after a
00:09:59
football accident leaves him with a rare medical condition
00:10:01
called Acquired Savant Syndrome.

In an article in the National Library of Medicine, daryl A

Treffert describes this condition, quote, as in which
00:10:09
savant abilities suddenly and unexpectedly surface in
00:10:12
neurotypical persons with no special prior interest or
00:10:16
ability in the new skills, accompanied by an obsessive
00:10:20
interest with and compulsive need to display the new
00:10:23
abilities.

When the idea for this book emerged, what came first?

Mike Brink's savant syndrome, puzzles or something else

entirely?

Speaker 2: That's a great question.

The puzzles came first, really, and also the character of Jess
00:10:38
Price, who presents this puzzle to Mike Brink, the character in
00:10:43
the book.
00:10:43
I knew that I wanted to write a story about someone who was
00:10:50
confronted with a mysterious puzzle that brought them into an
00:10:55
ancient mystery, something that seems completely outside of
00:10:59
21st century New York, where this is set and we begin with an
00:11:04
incarcerated woman named Jess Price who hasn't spoken about
00:11:07
her crime to anyone for years, and then one day she draws a
00:11:12
puzzle, she draws a cipher and it's very mysterious.
00:11:16
Her therapist doesn't know what to make of it and so, of course
00:11:20
, they call one of the world's most famous puzzle solvers Mike
00:11:24
Brink, and you just mentioned his backstory about how he
00:11:28
acquired this skill.
00:11:29
That part of this equation came later.
00:11:33
I had written a whole draft of this book without him having
00:11:36
that ability.
00:11:37
He was just a smart puzzle solver and I started to think
00:11:41
about it and I knew I wanted him to have a kind of compulsion to
00:11:46
solve and need, and also I needed for that character to
00:11:50
have the stakes be higher, where it's not just something he's
00:11:54
good at but it's life and death, for him Acquired savants, as I
00:11:59
think you mentioned in the quote from Dr Treffert.

They have a need to display it and the way that their brain
00:12:07
interprets their skill, whatever that is.
00:12:10
For some people it's playing the piano, drawing, mathematical
00:12:14
skills.
00:12:14
These savants and abilities are across the spectrum.
00:12:18
There's many different kinds, but for Mike it's solving
00:12:21
patterns and puzzles and it manifests itself in their minds
00:12:27
and for some people, almost the way that risk-taking or danger
00:12:33
or the high we feel from falling in love or some sort of liminal
00:12:39
, amazing experience.
00:12:40
Each time he solves a puzzle he feels that in his body and so
00:12:46
he needs it and he wants it, and so that becomes sort of the
00:12:49
driving force for him.
00:12:50
The other element very little bit one thread, because I think
00:12:53
writers pull from everywhere is that I have a son who has he's
00:12:58
not a savant, but he has a strange ability to read very
00:13:03
quickly and remember things.
00:13:05
When he was little, right Like now it's maybe a little bit
00:13:08
different because he's in a field that's really hard.
00:13:11
He's in college, but when he was like eight or nine he would
00:13:20
just glance at a book, not even really read it, just sort of
00:13:21
glance at it, and then he would take the test and it was perfect
00:13:23
, Like he had just remembered it , and I was always fascinated by
00:13:25
how that was working with him, because I don't have anything
00:13:29
like that ability.
00:13:31
And then I've seen, as he's gotten older, him working around
00:13:35
it right.
00:13:36
Sometimes that's a good thing, Sometimes that's hard for him,
00:13:39
Sometimes it makes him feel awkward in social situations,
00:13:42
and so I wanted to explore I mean, that was the emotional
00:13:46
pull.
00:13:46
I wanted to explore a character who has a talent but doesn't
00:13:50
quite know how that talent fits into themselves and their way in
00:13:55
the world.
00:13:56
Speaker 1: You bring up a great point, Danielle, and that is
00:13:59
that our children teach us so much.
00:14:02
Their curiosity reminds us to be curious.
00:14:05
Speaker 2: It's fascinating, I think, toni Morrison.
00:14:07
Someone asked Toni Morrison once should I have children?
00:14:10
And she said have one.
00:14:12
And I actually have three.
00:14:16
So I'm very busy, but I think having a child as a writer yes,
00:14:22
it cuts into your time, like you have less time to read.
00:14:25
Sometimes you have less time to write.
00:14:27
Your schedule is not as free, but I am continually discovering
00:14:31
beautiful, complicated human traits from my children and they
00:14:37
delight me every day.
00:14:38
So I feel very strongly that having a child is a good thing
00:14:44
for being human, but also for being a writer.
00:14:46
Speaker 1: Yeah, I equate it to the way I feel about fiction.

I think reading fiction and having children, they both help
00:14:54
us to develop our empathy.

Okay, let's talk about a couple of your other characters,

because I was taken with your character, thessaly Moses, who

is the therapist for inmate Jess Price, and I was wondering when
00:15:06
you first saw these two women, were they as you wrote them, or
00:15:10
did their personalities change as you develop the manuscript?

Speaker 2: Strangely enough, they were exactly as I conceived

of them.

As I mentioned earlier, jess Price was one of the first

characters to sort of come alive in this book, and I saw her as
00:15:26
this damaged woman who had been through an incredibly horrific
00:15:31
ordeal.
00:15:32
Her boyfriend died in front of her, essentially, and she's
00:15:37
accused of a crime that she doesn't understand how it
00:15:40
happened, and so her reaction is to go inward and to just clamp
00:15:43
up and not talk at all.
00:15:45
But her therapist is this wonderfully empathetic, smart
00:15:50
African American therapist who has been trying for years to
00:15:55
understand her, and I love that dynamic between women.
00:15:58
I feel like I've seen that before, you know, in different
00:16:03
manifestations, but I don't know if I've seen it between two
00:16:05
women, like, quite like that.
00:16:07
And so those characters were they just came to me fully
00:16:11
formed that way.

Speaker 1: I love the way they pranced onto the page.

Speaker 2: It's so unusual actually For me.

I'm usually developing characters for a long time.

So you know, with Mike Brink it took a long time for him to

become a round full character.

Speaker 1: Yeah, and look at him now.

Speaker 2: Now he's, you know, he's really established himself,

he's not leaving.

Speaker 1: Yeah, he's there to stay.

In your October 2023 essay for Crime Reads titled what Are

Thriller Authors Truly Afraid Of , you wrote about a

life-changing event you experienced in fifth grade.

Can you share that event with our listeners and how it
00:16:51
influenced your writing and anxiety about religion?
00:16:55
Speaker 2: So when I was in fifth grade, I was in Catholic
00:16:58
school.
00:16:58
I had been in Catholic school since first grade and part of
00:17:02
the program was every morning from, I think, 7.30 until 8,
00:17:06
there was mass, and all the little children would go and sit
00:17:10
in the pews, and we would do that every day, and then one day
00:17:13
after mass, the students exited .
00:17:14
It was about eight o'clock in the pews, and we would do that
00:17:15
every day, and then one day after mass, uh, the the students
00:17:16
exited.
00:17:17
It was about eight o'clock in the morning.
00:17:19
We went into our classrooms it's cold, remember that and
00:17:23
everyone was sitting down.
00:17:25
I had to go to the bathroom and so I got.
00:17:26
I asked to go and I was in the restroom, which was sort of at
00:17:29
one end of the school, and I heard shots.
00:17:32
I didn't know exactly what it was.
00:17:36
I mean, my father was a hunter, so I had heard gunshots before.
00:17:39
But I was very confused and I came out of the restroom area
00:17:45
and the principal of the school, a nun named Sister Rose Francis
00:17:49
, came running from the church into the door and she took a
00:17:54
broom and she, you know, barricaded the door.
00:17:58
What had happened is that a gunman had come into the church
00:18:01
and had shot the priest, a lay minister and a janitor and was
00:18:06
in the basement of the church trying to get into the lunchroom
00:18:09
where the cooks were preparing lunch.
00:18:11
All three of those people that were shot had died and it was
00:18:19
just a kind of life-changing moment for me because before
00:18:23
that point I had never really questioned death or violence or
00:18:30
any of those things and also the way these things happen.
00:18:34
It's strange because it folded into religion for me, the way
00:18:38
these things do, and even I didn't realize that that was the
00:18:42
case.
00:18:42
But then as an adult, when I started writing novels,
00:18:46
inevitably there was this confluence of mysticism,
00:18:50
religion, imagery from religious paintings and murals and
00:18:57
violence and it didn't fully like dawn on me that this was
00:19:02
perhaps something that I was taking with me from my childhood
00:19:05
until actually, the Puzzle Master right, the new book, when
00:19:08
I'm like, here I am again, you know, exploring religion or
00:19:11
mysticism in some way through violence.
00:19:12
And how is that?
00:19:13
You know exploring religion or mysticism in some way through

You know, how is that possible?

Because I'm really, you know, you know this Puzzle Master

character.

He really has nothing to do with religion or violence.

So, yeah, I think that that experience really shaped me, and

it's taken a long time for me not only to realize it, but now
00:19:36
in my new book.

I have a book coming out after the Puzzle Master called the

Puzzle Box.

There's not really that element in it and I feel sort of
00:19:44
liberated because I think I realized it with this book that
00:19:46
that's what was happening.

Speaker 1: And with that we've kind of circled back to what we
00:19:50
were talking about earlier experiences from our past
00:19:54
showing up again as we get older , but we're able to have a
00:19:58
deeper understanding of them.

I am so sorry you went through that experience.

That must have been terrifying as a child.

Do you ever speak to any of the other children that you were at
00:20:09
school with at that time?
00:20:11
Speaker 2: So all of this happened in Wisconsin, where I
00:20:13
grew up.
00:20:13
I left that state fairly early in my early 20s, but recently I
00:20:20
reconnected with a boy who was in my class.
00:20:22
He was sort of my little companion.
00:20:26
He was someone who they used to have these reading contests
00:20:30
where they had, like, you know, you'd color in a square of a
00:20:33
drawing after you read a book, and he and I were always like
00:20:35
competing to win.
00:20:36
He was very smart and really fun, and he reached out to me on
00:20:41
Facebook a while ago and we have sort of you know, exchanged
00:20:45
thoughts about it.
00:20:47
I haven't sat down in person with someone.
00:20:49
I would like to, though, because I'm really interested to
00:20:54
see how other people that went through that experience
00:20:56
metabolized it.
00:20:58
For me, writing is a way of metabolizing experience.

My memoir about my father allowed me to grow beyond that
00:21:08
childhood experience in many ways and be able to also help
00:21:12
other people.
00:21:12
That book is taught in schools, and children read it and can
00:21:17
see an echo of their situation in it, but I wonder how other
00:21:20
people who don't have that ability to write and reflect in
00:21:24
that way go through life.

Yes, one hopes they have some other creative outlet, whether
00:21:29
it be through music, dance or art, exactly some sort of
00:21:32
expression right, some sort of way of making that narrative,
00:21:34
some sort of expression right, some sort of way of making that
00:21:37
narrative understandable, because it's really confusing
00:21:41
for a child to understand that level of violence and fear.
00:21:46
Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, I mean look at your experience.

It took you decades before you were actually able to understand
00:21:52
the experience, and that came through writing.
00:21:55
Speaker 2: Yeah, it takes us our whole lives, you know, for many
00:21:59
things.

Speaker 1: Well, let's move on to something a little lighter,
00:22:03
and that is I would love to hear your publishing story, from
00:22:05
your first finished manuscript to finding an agent and landing
00:22:09
a publishing deal, ah so it was a long journey.
00:22:14
Speaker 2: I started writing, as I mentioned, that that memoir
00:22:17
about my father was the book I wanted to write.
00:22:19
I never saw myself as a writer, as like a career writer.
00:22:22
I just wanted to tell stories and I wanted to write that
00:22:25
particular book and so I wrote some pages of that and they got
00:22:29
me into the Iowa Writers Workshop in Iowa City.
00:22:32
I was writing it as fiction at the time, interestingly enough,
00:22:40
because I didn't really understand that it needed to be
00:22:42
a memoir, and so I spent two years there writing a novel
00:22:47
about my relationship with my father.
00:22:48
Some of the sections were very much my life, right.
00:22:50
I basically transcribed conversations and experiences
00:22:53
with my father and then I got out of Iowa I, I graduated and I
00:22:58
won a small prize for that book and then that prize sort of
00:23:02
gave me the ability to find an agent.
00:23:04
So this agent said, okay, I'll try to sell it, and sent it out
00:23:08
to, I think, 25 editors and it was rejected by everyone and the
00:23:14
the feedback that was coming back to us, to me, was that it
00:23:19
was just unbelievable, right, even though it was pretty much a
00:23:22
true.
00:23:23
You know, a lot of it was a true story, the events of my
00:23:27
childhood.
00:23:27
For example, my father brought home a human skull from Vietnam
00:23:31
and it was on the mantle of our living room that those sorts of
00:23:35
details were so strange that it almost had to be nonfiction.
00:23:40
But I couldn't realize that as I was writing it.
00:23:45
I needed that feedback and also to feel that shock, right, the
00:23:49
shock of oh, my goodness.
00:23:50
I just spent like three years or whatever, writing this draft
00:23:55
and it's not working.
00:23:56
But, as many writers do, I put it aside and I decided to try it
00:24:03
as a memoir.
00:24:04
I took some of the same material that was in that book
00:24:07
and I rewrote it and rearranged it on a 50 page sample.

We sold that book with six editors bidding a couple of.
00:24:16
It was a couple of years later.
00:24:17
I, you know I spent a lot of time fixing it up, but still it
00:24:21
shows you readers don't often think about the importance of
00:24:25
genre or how you're packaging or framing that story, but for me
00:24:30
as a writer, it taught me that the way that we present the
00:24:33
story nonfiction, fiction, memoir, thriller, literary
00:24:37
fiction all of these categories signal something for a reader
00:24:42
and it was immediately acceptable.
00:24:46
Speaker 1: Pretty much the same story Was it difficult to put it
00:24:49
back into first person.
00:24:51
Speaker 2: It was very hard because all of the devices that
00:24:54
I had created in fiction to protect myself I had to tear
00:24:58
away.
00:24:58
So that book Falling Through the Earth, the memoir that was
00:25:03
eventually published, is very much about my journey, even
00:25:08
though it's about my relationship with my father.
00:25:10
It's about how I grew through that relationship and I think
00:25:15
with the novel I didn't want to address that as much.
00:25:18
I wasn't able to address that and so it was very hard.

It took a long time to write.
00:25:23
You know there were times with that book you know this has
00:25:26
never happened again where I was crying as I was writing because
00:25:29
it was so personal and such a healing experience for me that
00:25:35
it had to be that way.

But you know that was the process and I'm very proud of
00:25:40
that book.

It's a unique book in my in I've written seven books and
00:25:44
it's very unique considering what it is.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it definitely takes courage to write a memoir.

Okay, let's talk about the Iowa Writers Workshop.

How was this experience and what takeaways from this course
00:25:58
did you find most valuable?
00:26:00
Speaker 2: So it was an extremely wonderful thing to
00:26:03
have happened, because I was, you know, a young woman who had
00:26:08
no network of writers.
00:26:10
As I mentioned, no one in my family was a writer.
00:26:13
Nobody really even understood what that meant and I, you know,
00:26:18
would seek out other people who wrote, but no one was writing
00:26:21
consistently or professionally.
00:26:22
So going to the Iowa Writers Workshop was wonderful for me
00:26:25
because I met people who were as serious about this process as I
00:26:30
was.
00:26:30
It also gave me two full years to do nothing but write.
00:26:35
I think for a young writer or anyone who wants to write
00:26:41
seriously, what you need is time uninterrupted as much as
00:26:46
possible, so that you're not working full time doing
00:26:49
something else and then doing this on the side.
00:26:51
So that was really great.

It's interesting because there was a panel here yesterday at
00:26:55
the San Miguel Writers Conference with five writers and
00:26:58
the question was asked about MFA programs and one person said
00:27:02
, oh, I'm so glad I didn't go to one, because she felt that it
00:27:07
would have sort of made her more like other writers, like her
00:27:12
individuality and things that make her special as a writer
00:27:16
would have been sanded down.
00:27:17
And you know there's a lot of complaint that workshop stories
00:27:21
are very mediocre because they're what everybody likes.
00:27:25
It's like art by committee and, interestingly for me, I was at
00:27:29
that time writing the story about my father and I didn't.
00:27:33
I've never written short stories, I've always.
00:27:34
That was a novel and so I was outside of the mold anyway and I
00:27:38
always got everyone.
00:27:39
No one knew what to do with me anyway, so I wasn't.
00:27:42
You know.
00:27:43
Nothing was sanded down or made by committee, because everyone
00:27:46
just either sort of kind of shrugged their shoulders like
00:27:48

You know she's turning in pieces of a novel.

I don't even understand the narrative arc here because we
00:27:53
don't have the beginning or the end.
00:27:55
We have this little piece in the middle.

So that was pretty good for me, I think.

Speaker 1: It sounds like it was more about the community of
00:28:02
being around like-minded people.
00:28:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess I mean looking at it retrospectively,
00:28:13
modeling myself on writers who were successful.
00:28:14
When I was there, we had visiting writers, we had the
00:28:17
faculty.
00:28:18
We had so many interesting and successful writers coming
00:28:21
through that I saw really for the first time in my life that
00:28:25
writing is something I could do every day, and then it's
00:28:29
something that I could do my whole life and it wasn't going
00:28:31
to be just those two years where I was in school.
00:28:35
So that was really special.
00:28:37

What are you currently reading?

Speaker 2: I am currently reading a Chris Pavone novel.

Actually, I just got it yesterday, so I've just started.

He wrote Two Nights in Lisbon, which was a bestseller, I think

a year ago or two years ago.

He's here at the Writers' Conference, so I'm giving him a
00:28:55
plug.

The book I'm reading I think was his second novel and he

writes international thrillers with female heroines.

Speaker 1: And they're all really wonderful, so I highly

recommend all of them.

I really enjoy not just traveling, but I like sinking

into a culture and getting rhythms, like I wake up and this

is the coffee shop I like to go to and these are the people

that I meet and know because I've been there.

Even if you live in another English speaking country, there

are so many cultural activities and rituals to explore.

That's what I love about living in other countries and, like
