that I need quickly, whereas if it was tidy I don't think I

I mean that you're actually a book person.

Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think the books are happy this way.

conversations, let's begin with learning about you, your work as

a teacher and writing fiction, nonfiction and poetry.

Speaker 2: Well, I think writer is probably the identity that
00:03:03
comes first to me and second and last and so on, I do think of
00:03:09
myself first and foremost as a writer, and I do jump around.
00:03:12
I love to write poetry, I love to write about the creative
00:03:17
process.
00:03:17
Short stories are maybe my favorite thing to write, but
00:03:21
then novels novels too.
00:03:22
I mean.
00:03:22
It turns out that you need all of these different outlets to be
00:03:26
able to capture all the things that are going on in your head
00:03:30
and your heart, at least for me anyway.
00:03:32
So there's that, and I'm also at Georgetown University where I
00:03:37
am the assistant director for graduate student and faculty
00:03:40
programming at the teaching center on campus, and that
00:03:43
basically means I just I work with faculty and grad students
00:03:47
to help them be the passionate, informed, skilled teachers that
00:03:52
they want to be.
00:03:52
I also teach there.
00:03:54
I teach undergraduate courses in creative writing and a
00:03:59
graduate course in creativity.
00:04:01
Speaker 1: And have you found that there is just as much
00:04:03
excitement and enrollment for students wanting to study
00:04:06
creative writing as, say, five or ten years ago?
00:04:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, I have found the same level.
00:04:12
I'm in a kind of a weird situation because I teach it in
00:04:15
what is essentially Georgetown's Jewish Studies Department.
00:04:18
They decided they wanted more humanities there, which is great
00:04:22
, because a Jewish studies department, if it doesn't have
00:04:24
humanities, becomes all Holocaust and Middle East
00:04:29
conflict.
00:04:30
So it's not exactly like housing these in an English
00:04:33
department where everyone's expecting to see creative
00:04:36
writing.
00:04:36
But I do get students and I haven't noticed any tailing off
00:04:41
over the last few years.
00:04:42
Speaker 1: And is it the same for people wanting to learn how
00:04:45
to teach creative writing?
00:04:46
Speaker 2: Well, I don't work specifically with any one
00:04:49
department, so you know I work with people.
00:04:52
I worked with somebody today who studies technology and war,
00:04:58
and someone worked with a philosopher yesterday, and you
00:05:01
know folks in biology, folks in history, from all over the
00:05:05
campus, so it isn't necessarily particularly creative writing.
00:05:09
Some of these are just principles that transcend any
00:05:12
discipline, like building relationships in your classroom
00:05:15
between you and students to help set up learning, giving
00:05:18
students feedback that's helpful to them, and so on.
00:05:22
Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about your latest novel,
00:05:23
Possible Happiness.
00:05:24
It's a teen YA novel and I was so used to reading your poetry,
00:05:34
which I adore.
00:05:35
Speaker 2: So my question is why this genre?
00:05:36
And why now?
00:05:36
Well, I have to say I have a long standing habit of having no
00:05:38
idea what I'm doing, and that typically takes the form of not
00:05:43
knowing what genre I'm apparently writing in.
00:05:46
So you may remember, a few years ago, when my novel how to
00:05:49
Mars came out so that's science fiction, and anybody would know
00:05:53
that it's set on Mars.
00:05:55
But I didn't realize that I was writing science fiction, and so
00:05:58
I just thought I was writing about people, and so my agent
00:06:03
sent that around, and he sent it to presses that were interested
00:06:06
in sci-fi.
00:06:06
And a total surprise to me In this case, a press picked it up
00:06:11
and said well, we're going to put this novel out through our
00:06:14
YA division.
00:06:14
And I said oh really, is it YA fiction?
00:06:17
And they informed me that indeed it was.
00:06:20
I thought I was just writing about a kid growing up, although
00:06:23
when you say it out loud it does kind of sound like it and
00:06:26
do you remember when the story first came to you?
00:06:29
I was at this retreat center in Virginia called the Porches,
00:06:33
which is a wonderful place, and I had driven myself down there
00:06:38
and was listening to music on the radio and I was hearing all
00:06:41
this music from my youth and it was making me weirdly sad.
00:06:45
You know, it wasn't this kind of happy nostalgia and I thought
00:06:48
what's that about?
00:06:49
And I'm very interested in writing into the difficult
00:06:54
emotions.
00:06:54
You know whatever's bothering me or making me uncomfortable.
00:06:57
So I said, well, let's get in there.
00:06:59
And this novel is set during the time period when I was a
00:07:03
teenager.
00:07:03
It's set at the same high school I went to.
00:07:06
You know a lot of the same situations and he's going
00:07:11
through some things that I went through and it really helped me
00:07:15
to get a little bit under what was hard for me about some of my
00:07:18
high school years, but also what was exciting.
00:07:21
I mean, I think I hope the book is a blend of serious but also
00:07:25
funny.
00:07:26
Speaker 1: It's definitely both for sure.
00:07:28
Let's talk about the music from the 80s for a bit.
00:07:31
Some people look back and say, oh my God, the 80s terrible,
00:07:34
blue eyeshadow, big hair, you know crazy music.
00:07:37
But I was living in England at the time, in London, and you
00:07:42
have to remember that it was a very tumultuous time.
00:07:44
We had Reagan and Thatcher.
00:07:46
People were angry.
00:07:47
I think the music reflects that , and when something like this
00:07:52
happens in history, that's what happens.
00:07:55
The music, the art, the writing , it all reflects what is going
00:08:00
on in society at that time, and I actually loved the music from
00:08:04
the 80s.
00:08:05
I thought it was really fun, but it definitely reflected our
00:08:08
emotions, as did the fashion, I think.
00:08:11
What are your thoughts?
00:08:11
Do you agree?
00:08:13
Speaker 2: I really do, and I think it is connected to the
00:08:15
larger social political scene.
00:08:17
You know, here in the States we were dealing with the Reagan
00:08:21
era and you know then the first Bush era and so a lot of the
00:08:26
music of the time that was kind of angry and aggressive.
00:08:28
Maybe it's not surprising that that appealed to me.
00:08:32
Nine Inch Nails is still one of my favorite bands to this day
00:08:37
and it was almost a kind of a lifeline thrown to a kid.
00:08:41
To have a song like Head, like a Hole to thrash around to and
00:08:47
to get out some of the angry energy really was a kind of a
00:08:51
gift to me.
00:08:53
But yeah, it absolutely brings me back to that time period.
00:08:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, and even now, when we wear a t-shirt with a
00:08:59
band name on it, it is an invitation for a conversation,
00:09:02
right, yeah, and it's a statement of who we are Now in
00:09:05
Possible Happiness.

Are there any other similarities that Jacob shares
00:09:10
with you?
00:09:10
Yeah, I mean quite a lot.
00:09:12
Is this a memoir, david?
00:09:16
Speaker 2: Right secretly, I mean, it's not right In the
00:09:20
sense that I manipulated anything I needed to in order to
00:09:23
make it work as a story.
00:09:24
I combined people, I added people who didn't exist at all.
00:09:29
I gave my my straight father, gay husband.
00:09:35
You know, I like I did all kinds of things.
00:09:38
He hasn't gotten his copy yet, so we'll see how that goes.
00:09:42
So you know there's so many things that are changed and yet,
00:09:45
you know, he went to the same school as me, at the same time I
00:09:48
did.
00:09:49
He listened to the same music.
00:09:50
He had friends who were very similar to the friends I had.
00:09:53
He had a very similar family situation.
00:09:56
He lived in West Philly, just like me.
00:09:59
He had a great sister, just like I do.
00:10:02
There just were all sorts of similarities, but I think the
00:10:05
most important one is that and this is really at the heart of
00:10:08
the book is he discovered something in high school that I
00:10:11
discovered also, which is, even if you're kind of a melancholy
00:10:16
person, you can draw people to you through a sense of humor,
00:10:21
which turns out to be both good news and bad news.
00:10:23
So he discovers that I discovered it that if you draw
00:10:27
your friends to you in that way, it's exciting and fun, but what
00:10:30
about when you are sad and they're not prepared for that to
00:10:34
be a side of you?
00:10:35
Then what?
00:10:36
And I think the book is to a certain extent about how you
00:10:39
move past that first thing to something more complex.
00:10:43
Speaker 1: You must have had so much fun contacting all your
00:10:45
friends from back at that time and just having conversations
00:10:49
about life back then.
00:10:50
Speaker 2: Yeah.
00:10:51
Speaker 1: Let's go back to what you're talking about earlier
00:10:54
with Jacob's father.
00:10:55
He's a gay man living in Philadelphia.
00:10:57
It was a complex situation in the 80s, perhaps not as complex
00:11:01
as it would have been in San Francisco or in the middle of
00:11:05
New York, but from your book I'm gathering it was a little
00:11:08
different.
00:11:08
For a businessman it was probably uncomfortable to be in
00:11:13
a public situation and kiss another man or hold their hand,
00:11:18
and this was dependent on where you were in the world.
00:11:21
Speaker 2: I think even in parts of New York, and I think even,
00:11:24
as you say, to this day.
00:11:26
I mean, I'm not sure I would walk all around Staten Island
00:11:29
and hope for the best, but yeah.
00:11:31
I misspoke earlier when I said gay husband.
00:11:35
I mean, he has a partner who would be a husband in this day
00:11:40
and age, but of course they couldn't have been back then.
00:11:42
And that is one of the things that I'm definitely trying to do
00:11:45
in the book is to give people a kind of before, after or, more
00:11:50
likely, a before, during.
00:11:52
So you see what it's like to be queer in the late 80s.
00:11:56
You see, there's a lot about race in the book and gender
00:12:02
religion In particular.
00:12:04
There's a lot about mental illness and sort of not having
00:12:07
the words for it because people weren't talking about it.
00:12:10
And then here we are now.
00:12:12
And like I say it's not after because, none of those things
00:12:16
have really been dealt with in society in a fully meaningful
00:12:21
way, but I do feel like we're in the conversation more than we
00:12:26
used to be about race, about mental health, about sexuality,
00:12:30
etc.
00:12:30
Speaker 1: Yeah, now possible happiness follows Jacob
00:12:33
navigating through his junior year of high school and what he
00:12:36
calls bad feelings or self-loathing.
00:12:39
On page 209, you wrote quote Jacob felt like everything
00:12:44
inside him was crashing together , end quote.
00:12:47
And on page 213, quote how much the air weighed on him, end
00:12:52
quote.
00:12:52
The story leads up to a few pivotal moments that show Jacob
00:12:57
falling into depression when you initially had the idea for his
00:13:01
story.
00:13:01
Was Jacob's depression at the core of the story, or was it
00:13:05
more a coming-of-age story?
00:13:07
Speaker 2: Well, it started, as I say, with that sadness around
00:13:11
the music, but I didn't know what that was and I didn't know
00:13:15
if it was something about now or about then or both.
00:13:19
And so I just started writing my way into the situation and I,
00:13:24
like Jacob, had this moment in junior year where, all of a
00:13:28
sudden, there was this social life and I had been, you know,
00:13:32
not a loner quite before that, but just had maybe these couple
00:13:36
of close friends, and now there was this big group and I thought
00:13:39
, well, that's the heart of the action, so let's start talking
00:13:42
about that.
00:13:43
I realized that one of the issues was that you have this
00:13:47
kid who has never been asked to think about mental health and
00:13:52
yet has stuff going on.
00:13:54
He doesn't have words for it, he doesn't really have a
00:13:56
framework.
00:13:56
He doesn't really have a framework, he doesn't know if
00:13:59
it's acceptable to have a range of feelings like he does, and he
00:14:04
doesn't really know where to turn.
00:14:05
His mom is struggling, his sister is off at college, his
00:14:09
dad's out of the house, his friends maybe don't want to hear
00:14:12
it.
00:14:12
So who do you talk to about this , and how much is this a thing
00:14:17
that should be seen as normal, and how much should this be seen
00:14:22
as a sign that he's broken?
00:14:23
So that quickly became the focus of this book.
00:14:27
It was really helpful for me to look back at those times
00:14:32
through that lens of what did I not know then.
00:14:35
That would have been so helpful to know, and I think people are
00:14:39
much better young people are much better in this day and age
00:14:42
and they know a lot more and they're more able to talk about
00:14:46
things.
00:14:47
There's less stigma and so on.
00:14:48
But I hope, if young people do read this book, that there'll be
00:14:52
some encouragement there of like, hey, you know, you're not
00:14:55
alone.
00:14:55
A lot of people go through stuff.
00:14:57
It doesn't mean you're broken, it just means you're complex,
00:15:00
and everybody's complex.
00:15:02
Speaker 1: Having taught AP art and theater to high school
00:15:04
students, I've seen how important the liberal arts are
00:15:08
in developing and supporting teens.
00:15:10
As a university professor, what are your thoughts on the
00:15:14
ever-decreasing funding of arts programs in education, and how
00:15:18
do you see this affecting young adults?
00:15:21
Speaker 2: I mean it's terrible.
00:15:22
I imagine you didn't expect me to say I'm all for it.
00:15:25
No, it's atrocious.
00:15:27
I saw a meme on Instagram that I thought was really funny and
00:15:32
sobering at the same time.
00:15:33
It said science without humanities makes Spider-Man
00:15:39
villains and humanities without science makes Batman villains,
00:15:44
which, if you spend a couple minutes with it, it kind of
00:15:46
plays out.
00:15:47
But I think the larger point being partial educations warp us
00:15:55
and if you want to have a heroically whole personality
00:15:59
that can understand not just how a thing works but also whether
00:16:03
it should work and what it should be used for and who it
00:16:06
affects and why we should care, if you have all of those pieces,
00:16:10
then I think you can move in a really positive way through the
00:16:13
world.
00:16:14
And if you have some of the pieces, you know it's like
00:16:17
having just a hammer and you're just going to hammer everything
00:16:20
everywhere you go and it's a real shame.
00:16:22
So I think the liberal arts should be understood the
00:16:28
foundation for people growing up today.
00:16:31
Speaker 1: Well, I'm sure you and I could talk about this
00:16:33
subject for hours and hours.
00:16:35
One thing I will say is that I do believe that with a
00:16:39
background in the arts we become better problem solvers for sure
00:16:44
.
00:16:44
When my students used to come into the room, especially in the
00:16:48
art department sometimes they just didn't feel motivated to
00:16:51
paint or draw I used to say to them look, whatever you're
00:16:55
feeling, it's better out than in .
00:16:56
I don't care if you write a word on the canvas, if you
00:17:00
splash a color of paint, pick a color that goes with the mood
00:17:03
you're feeling right now, but it's better out than in.
00:17:06
Do something, just write that one word, anything.
00:17:10
And nine out of 10 times it worked and they felt better.
00:17:14
And, honestly, if they don't have that, I don't know how they
00:17:19
cope.
00:17:20
Speaker 2: Right, you have to let it out somehow and I think
00:17:22
things come out sideways, which is almost always destructive.
00:17:26
I have done this assignment in my fiction class before.
00:17:30
I do it pretty deep into the semester because we have to
00:17:33
trust each other a lot for this to go well.
00:17:35
But it's called Write the Story You're Not Allowed to Write.
00:17:38
It's not, you know, something where you're giving a secret
00:17:41
away from your family, unless you want to, I suppose.
00:17:44
And it's not necessarily sex or violence, it's whatever would
00:17:48
make the student nervous if their name was attached to this.
00:17:52
It's like you know, I'm writing sympathetically, from the point
00:17:55
of view of a character that I theoretically don't approve of.
00:17:58
Or I'm this cynical person and I'm going to write this really
00:18:01
earnest story that shows I actually do believe in some
00:18:05
things.
00:18:05
You know, whatever it is, and I give them an option that they
00:18:09
can, a very benign alternative option, so they don't have to do
00:18:13
this and I say and you can just hand it to me, or you can just
00:18:16
write it for yourself and give me the other one and never have
00:18:19
to look at it.
00:18:20
But of course they produce some of their best writing that
00:18:22
they've produced all semester long.
00:18:24
They usually choose to bring it to the workshop and share it
00:18:27
with everybody and they discover that shining the flashlight
00:18:30
around in the dark places doesn't actually hurt you and in
00:18:34
fact it makes you safer, because everything comes out in
00:18:37
an intentional, constructive, productive way, and that's one
00:18:41
of the ways that these outlets are crucial for people.
00:18:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, I have friends and relatives in the UK and they
00:18:47
are concerned because so many of the creative programs, the
00:18:51
liberal arts programs, are being pulled from universities.
00:18:54
Speaker 2: And all of the languages are getting hit pretty
00:18:56
hard.
00:18:57
You have a language that the school decides is not an
00:19:00
important language, whatever that means.
00:19:01
You know you're out.
00:19:03
Schools are suffering serious budget crunches so I know
00:19:06
they're facing some difficult choices, but you know we don't
00:19:11
want to make choices that actually harm our students.
00:19:15
Speaker 1: That's the most crucial thing and those
00:19:17
decisions are crucial to the stability of our communities,
00:19:20
our society.
00:19:21
Right, quite right.
00:19:23
Let's go back to possible happiness.
00:19:25
In the story, jacob is lucky in that he meets Leah.
00:19:28
She sees the shadow of what he's dealing with daily
00:19:35
depression.
00:19:35
Sadly, many teens and young adults never feel seen and fall
00:19:37
into the cracks of society, never getting the help they need
00:19:40
.
00:19:40
Did you witness these scenarios in your personal story of
00:19:44
growing up in Philadelphia?
00:19:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, I certainly did .
00:19:47
I mean, I saw the one case of it in the mirror, you know.
00:19:51
And then I saw other cases of it in my family.
00:19:54
I had friends at school who in retrospect were clearly dealing
00:19:59
with eating disorders or anxiety and again, there just wasn't a
00:20:05
way to talk about it where people were expecting to hear
00:20:10
about it, thoughtful about it.
00:20:11
You know you had to be tough, you had to be normal, whatever
00:20:17
that means.
00:20:18
So a lot of it slips through the cracks and I think some
00:20:22
people manage to get through that, you know, and they're okay
00:20:25
.
00:20:25
But then they're going to need to hit therapy at some point to
00:20:29
deal with all the stuff they've tucked away and all the scars
00:20:33
that have happened.
00:20:35
And I think it's great that we're in an era that normalizes
00:20:39
talking about these issues.
00:20:40
The only flip side to it is I was looking at some studies that
00:20:46
show that if you give more attention to your anxiety or
00:20:51
depression than it really needs from you, you can actually in a
00:20:55
way, make things worse.
00:20:57
So there are folks who are saying, let's say you're just a
00:21:00
little sad one day, you don't have depressive disorder, but if
00:21:05
you start thinking of it as depression, you can kind of get
00:21:08
a cycle going there.
00:21:09
So I feel like we're in stage two of a more than two-stage
00:21:14
process where eventually we'll be able to get some nuance, like
00:21:18
yeah, you're just sad and I'm here for you.
00:21:20
The fact that you're sad, tell me what you're sad about, and
00:21:24
someone else may be.
00:21:24
Okay, there's something maybe a little more intense going on
00:21:27
here.
00:21:27
How can we be helpful with that ?
00:21:34
Speaker 1: I'd love for there to be room for all the ways that
00:21:35
people can be.
00:21:35
I love what you said about putting the flashlight on and
00:21:37
looking into all the dark places , but it can also mean looking
00:21:41
into the lighthearted places too , the places of love and
00:21:44
compassion and kindness.
00:21:46
And, as I've said so many times , I truly believe that reading
00:21:50
well-written fiction helps us become more empathetic towards
00:21:54
others, because we're experiencing another's life
00:21:57
through their eyes.
00:21:58
Speaker 2: I really agree.
00:21:59
There's even some research to show this.
00:22:01
So in my fiction writing class I share some of that research
00:22:04
with my students and interestingly, it's really good
00:22:08
writing that does that.
00:22:09
You know, know, if you have very flat writing, if you're
00:22:13
doing a lot of telling instead of showing sort of she was great
00:22:17
, he was bad that people don't tend to the parts of their brain
00:22:21
that would really feel that don't light up.
00:22:23
But if you start describing textures and smells and things
00:22:27
like that, then you will have the empathetic experience.
00:22:30
So it's a real call for all of us to write more sensitively and
00:22:34
to make it so that these lives are really palpable on the page.

Speaker 1: That's so true, david .

Now tell me what are you currently reading?

Speaker 2: I'm reading a few books.
00:22:44
I'm reading a book by Asha Tonki called A Thousand Times
00:22:48
Before.

She was a former student of mine at Georgetown and she's a
00:22:52
wonderful writer.

It's a French novel about ants, and a lot of it is from the

And then there's Laleen Paul has a book called the Bees, and

all of it is from the point of view of bees, as far as I can

tell, and I don't know how that happened, but I'm enjoying them

I do like to be in the middle of several things at once, if I

and it's kind of exciting.

Someone mentioned the other day on the show when I asked her

this question about what she was reading.

She said in the morning it's always poetry, because that's

how I like to start my day.

She said it's like a tonic for her.

She explained that she reads fiction in the evening, reads

nonfiction during the day, because she doesn't want to read

it at night, which makes perfect sense, right?

Oh God, yes, especially these days.

But I found it interesting about her little journey during

the day, what makes her feel good and when she can cope with
00:24:24
the daily news and all that kind of thing.

Isn't that interesting?

Yes, it is, but probably better to do a book pairing than a

wine pairing in the first thing in the morning.

You know I have a whole system and with poetry I just try to

provoke them to come out by reading poetry or living an

interesting life, and then they come out.

Whenever they come out, and sometimes I'm walking to work

kind of writing them into the notes app on my phone, knowing

I'm going to have to clean it up later.

Other times I'm repeating the lines in my head if I can't even

get to my phone.

Yeah, it's much less predictable with the poems.

Speaker 1: The last time we spoke, David, the blossoms were

out in DC.

What's flowering out there now?

Speaker 2: There is always something flowering in DC.

I mean, maybe not always, but yeah, the crepe myrtle in front

of my building has its black grist hanging in it.

Speaker 1: Ours are flowering too, and they are absolutely

stunning.

Speaker 2: And then there are a ton of things where I actually

just don't know the species but bushes and trees of various

kinds, and some folks have some flowers going in their gardens

as well, in the neighborhood DC.

For all the problems we have here, most of which are imported

from the people that you know, the people that get sent to us

from other places as representatives and senators as

tough as all of that is, it's such a beautiful place, the most

beautiful place I've ever lived , I think.

you have the Library of Congress , so that's a plus.
